The Hebden Bridge Astronomy Society is a section of the Hebden Bridge Science & Literary Guild, that celebrated its 90th Anniversary in 1996 . The celebration was attended by Sir Bernard Ingham, whose maternal grandfather, Mr Greenwood Horsfall was a founder member of the Astronomy Section in 1918. The records show that this gentleman held the Chairman’s post from 1918 to 1924.

The section lapsed through until the mid 1980’s (1985) when the section was revived with Rosemary Naylor (One time proprietor of ‘Earth and Sky’) as Chairman. The speaker at our first 1985 ordinary meeting was Peter Drew of the Amateur Astronomy Centre and our second lecture was by Brian Jones of Bradford Astronomy Society. H.B.A.S. did go through a quiet spell a few years ago but is now buzzing away with a broad spectrum of members, both in age ,gender , depth of interest and activity.
